How You Can Help

Here’s some ways you can help support me on my hike:

1) Supportive Postcards and Emails

You can send inspirational quotes or just words of support via email (ruizcm118@gmail.com) or postcard. Successful completion of an AT thru-hike is mostly mental. A friendly email or postcard from home could really help me on a low day. See my mail drop schedule below to find when and where to send me a postcard.

2) Rides and Trail Visits

If you live somewhere conveniently near the trail offering your time to provide us shuttles to/from the trail to resupply will keep us from having the hitch rides with strangers and potentially being picked up by an ax murderer.

3) Food Care Package

Kenny and I will soon be burning up to 6,000 calories a day and will have enormous appetites while on our hike. If you would like to send us some goodies, they would be greatly appreciated! Please don’t send anything greater than 5lbs and ship via USPS (priority flat rate is the easiest usually). Some hostels and outfitters do not receive packages from FedEx or UPS so USPS is much simpler. Food ideas: freeze-dried backpacking food (like Mountain House), snickers, pop tarts, CliffBars, Luna Bars, peanut butter snack packs, starbucks via packets, packets of oatmeal, candy, beef jerky, cookies, etc. Just keep in mind I am allergic to walnuts and seafood (ALL seafood, including tuna, salmon, shrimp, etc). There are too 2 good rules for what kind of food to send to someone on a long distance hike: 1) look for things that won’t go bad un-refrigerated; 2) don’t send anything that is less an 100 calories per ounce.

4) For information on monetary support see my blog post

Thank you for any support! Anyone who supports us will receive a postcard after we have completed our hike.

Upcoming Addresses

My ETA is +/- 4 days, so mail things early. Hostels along the trail will hold mail for ~1 month, so aim to mail about 2 weeks before my ETA. I will update my ETA once Kenny and I get a feel of our hiking speed. Also, please leave me a comment below, so I know to check for surprises when I arrive. I won’t be checking for mail otherwise, and don’t want to miss any postcards or packages. Thanks Again!!
